Driveway & Concrete Cleaning: Removing Oil, Rust, and Organic Stains
Your driveway is one of the first things people see — and one of the hardest-working surfaces on your property. Concrete is porous, so it absorbs stains and grows organic buildup over time. The key to a great result is knowing that different stains need different approaches.
The three stains that matter most
1. Organic stains (the most common)
Dark gray, green, or black patches are usually algae, mildew, moss, or leaf tannins — especially in shaded areas. These respond best to a cleaning solution that kills the growth, followed by rinsing. Pure pressure removes the surface but the growth returns.
2. Oil and grease
Automotive oil soaks into the concrete, so blasting the surface rarely lifts a set-in stain. Oil typically needs a degreaser applied and given time to pull the oil out of the pores before rinsing. The longer an oil stain sits, the harder it is to fully remove.
3. Rust
Rust (from metal furniture, fertilizer, or well water) is a chemical stain, not a surface deposit. It needs a rust-specific treatment — general pressure washing won't touch it and can even drive it deeper.
Why technique protects your concrete
Concrete can be etched — left with permanent swirl marks or a rough, lightened texture — when a high-pressure tip is held too close or used at too high a setting. A careful approach uses the right pressure, the right nozzle, and consistent distance, often combined with a surface cleaner attachment for an even finish.
A note on where the water goes
Wash water carrying detergents and debris shouldn't be allowed to run freely into storm drains, which often flow directly to local creeks. Responsible companies manage runoff and use appropriate, eco-friendly products.
What you can do to keep it clean
- Clean up oil drips quickly before they soak in
- Move metal furniture and planters that can leave rust rings
- Keep the driveway swept and clear of leaf debris
- Schedule periodic professional cleaning before stains set
The NOVA approach
NOVA matches the method to the stain — degreasers for oil, targeted treatments for rust, and surface-safe cleaning for organic growth — with controlled pressure that protects your concrete and eco-friendly product options.
