Hiring a Pressure Washing Company During Charlotte's Water Restrictions: What to Check
In our previous post, we explained that under Charlotte Water's mandatory restrictions (in effect since May 15, 2026), homeowners can't do discretionary power washing themselves — but a licensed, professional power-washing business may still do the work. That makes one thing more important than ever: making sure the company you hire is actually a legitimate, registered business.
Because North Carolina has no statewide pressure-washing license, "licensed" really means "a legally established, properly registered business." Here's how to verify that before you book.
What to confirm before you hire
1. A registered business entity. A legitimate company is organized as a real business — for example, an LLC or corporation registered with the state. You can look up business registrations through the North Carolina Secretary of State's online business search.
2. Liability insurance. Ask for proof of general liability insurance. This protects your property if something is damaged, and it's a hallmark of a professional operation. (NOVA carries $1 million in coverage.)
3. A real local presence. A business address, a consistent business name, a working phone number, reviews, and a track record in the Charlotte area all signal legitimacy.
4. Awareness of the restrictions. A reputable company should already know the current rules, work water-efficiently, and be willing to talk through how they'll stay compliant.
5. Responsible practices. Ask how they handle wash-water runoff and what products they use — responsible companies manage runoff and choose appropriate, eco-friendly products.
Red flags to avoid
- No proof of insurance or business registration
- Cash-only, no paperwork, no written quote
- Pressure to "do it before anyone notices" the restrictions
- No fixed business name, address, or reviews
Why this protects you
During restrictions, hiring an unregistered "weekend" operator could mean the work isn't permitted, the company has no insurance if your siding or windows are damaged, and you have little recourse if something goes wrong. Hiring a legitimate, insured business keeps you on the right side of the rules and protects your home.
The NOVA approach
