Streak-Free Windows: Interior and Exterior Cleaning Tips
Few things sharpen a home's appearance like clean windows — and few things are more frustrating than finishing the job only to see streaks in the afternoon light. The good news: streaks are almost always about technique and timing, not the cleaner you're using.
Why windows streak
- Cleaning in direct sun — the solution dries before you can wipe it, leaving residue
- Dirty or low-quality cloths that smear rather than lift
- Too much product, which leaves a film
- Paper towels that shed lint
- Skipping the edges and corners where grime collects
A simple method for clear glass
- Start in the shade or on an overcast day so the glass doesn't flash-dry
- Pre-clean heavy dirt with a damp cloth so you're not grinding grit around
- Use a microfiber cloth or a squeegee, not paper towels
- With a squeegee, wipe in slightly overlapping strokes and wipe the blade between passes
- Buff the edges with a dry microfiber cloth
- Use a second dry cloth for a final buff
Don't forget tracks and sills
Even spotless glass looks neglected sitting in a dirty frame. Vacuum the tracks, then wipe sills and frames — it's the detail that makes the whole window look finished.
Exterior windows are a different job
Ground-floor exteriors are manageable, but upper floors, large panes, and hard-water spots are where a professional setup (and ladder safety) pays off. Exterior glass also collects pollen, sprinkler mineral spots, and algae that a quick wipe won't fully clear.
The NOVA approach
NOVA cleans interior and exterior windows as part of our detail-focused service — including sills and tracks — so the whole window looks finished, not just the glass.
